U19 League Cup - Monday 10th September 2012 kick off 7:46pm --- coldest night of the year so far, and guess what - extra time and penalties!
Basford won the shootout 3-1.
Kev was busy and couldn't make the game, so I spent the evening in the very pleasant company of Maurice "Mr.Mac" McFarland.
Arnold were favourites to win this game, They went ahead in the second minute - a superb long range effort from TOM LEES-COLLIER that flew past Craig Barker in the home net. The home team were level 60 seconds later though, KYLE KEETLEY came off best when he challenged for the ball with the Arnold keeper, and was left with a simple tap in.
KEETLEY put the home team ahead on 27, and that was how it stayed until the break. The Eagles were level with just 6 minutes of the second half played, LEES-COLLIER curling a 20 yard free-kick over Barker and into the back of the net. There were chances at both ends as the half progressed, but as the temperature dropped, and the players began cramping up, we had the sinking feeling we were headed for extra-time. F-T 2-2 AET 2-2
10 minutes (?) each way of extra time saw little in the way of chances, so into the penalty shoot out we went. Arnold missed their first two efforts, Basford missed their third, but when the visitors missed penalty number 4, Basford just needed to score to progress in the competition. When the ball hit the back of the net we left the ground quickly, hurrying for the warmth of our motors.
