Carlton Town 5-2 Sutton Town AFC

Notts F.A. Saturday Senior Cup Final

Carlton Town 5 ( Topliss, Darkin, Smithson, Wiggins-Thomas. Anderson
Sutton TAFC 2 ( C. Mitchell, Millns)

Carlton were forced to play central defender Grant Brindley in goal - regular keeper Mark Kearney ruled out with a broken finger. Sutton looked to be at full strength, with a bench that included former Eastwood Town defender Mathew Millns.

The last time we saw Carlton play in a Senior Cup final they were hammered 6-1 by Eastwood Town - sort of fitting really that they were successful on this occasion at the home of their previous victors, and against the team that knocked the Badgers out of the competition in an earlier round.

Met up with our Heanor Town friend Lee Spurr and spent the entire game in the big man's company. It was good to see so many familiar faces at Coronation Park, far to many to name them all, but we did manage to wangle a couple of corporates off Brett Marshall for Clipstone's game at home to Rossington Main on Saturday!

The game was only in it's third minute when JULIAN TOPLISS put Carlton ahead, turning neatly 15 yards from goal and firing a low drive into the far corner.  Sutton were level on 17 through CRAIG MITCHELL, the striker played in by Dale Gillatt and slotting the ball just wide of Brindley.

With 6 minutes of the half remaining a corner from the left was headed powerfully into the net from close range by ROB DARKIN. H-T 2-1

MAT MILLNS replaced Kyle Ludlow just after the break, and managed to stab the ball home at the far stick after a corner wasn't dealt with by the Millers' defence.

The Snipes weren't level for long though as LUKE SMITHSON fired home from the corner of the box just three minutes later.

RUEBEN WIGGINS-THOMAS added the fourth for Carlton on 68, forcing his way through the entire Sutton defence and prodding home from a couple of yards out.

The icing on the Carlton cake was supplied by BLAIR ANDERSON three minutes later, the former Unity player curling a beauty into the far corner of the goal from the corner of the area. Anderson was awarded MOM by the F.A. hierarchy, but our vote would have gone to Topliss who lead the Millers line superbly. F-T 5-2

T8's 4-1 Old Colonial

Sunday 28th April 2013 - Notts Sunday League Premier Premier Division.

T8's lost their unbeaten record to Trentside at Basford Utd last week, but according to skipper Danny Hayes they were seriously short of players. Apparently some had a great night out on Saturday and were not capable of playing!

That result meant that the Hucknall outfit still required four points from their remaining four games - with two of the games against third placed Gedling Inn, it was imperative that three points were gleaned from this game.

Arrived at the Rolls Sport Complex with five minutes to spare - and was pleased I decided to put on a warm coat. It was rather chilly at pitch-side.

Hayes was injured in the first minute after challenging for a header in front of the Colonial goal, but after a spot of treatment the Arnold Town man was allowed to rejoin the game.  It was HAYES who opened the scoring on 16, rising salmon-like to power home a header at the far post from Chay Betteridge's right wing corner.

Five minutes later it was 2-0 when AARON RYAN tried his luck from 25 yards and the ball cannoned off a defender before looping over unsighted keeper Richard Povey.

With three minutes of the half to play, the home team grabbed their third, CHAY BETTERIDGE bobbling the ball over the line after Damien Mann's superb run down the right and reverse pass found him 15 yards from goal. H-T 3-0

The first 30 minutes of the second period saw T8's take their collective feet of the pedals, and seemingly content to let the visitors drive at them. A kick up the arse came on 77 when the Colonial left winger cut in and slotted the ball past Jake Pearson in the home goal.

Shaken, the home team stepped up a gear and restored their three goal advantage 5 minutes later. The goal was created by Ryan after he robbed a defender and sent the ball across the face of the goal to the prolific ANDY START, who had the simple task of side-footing home at the far post. F-T 4-1

Not many in attendance - just five at kick-off time, increasing to 16 at full time.

Basford Utd 0-1 Aylestone Park

Greenwich Avenue called again - felt we just had to be there to see the United first team presented with the championship trophy.

Not the best performance by EMCL Champions Basford, but after the game they picked up the League trophy and individual mementos - the result forgotten amid the shower of champagne that accompanied skipper Ash Dyce raising the trophy...

The teams were really well matched and it took Basford until the 23rd minute to create their first decent chance - a Fabian Smith corner headed just over by Courtney Hastings.

Aylestone went even closer on 39. Karl Towers and Richard Gerald played a neat 1-2 before Gerald crossed into the area where Lyndon Seal headed the ball powerfully at goal only to see his effort crash off the bar. H-T 0-0

Hail and wind, sunshine and showers - oh, to be in England etc etc...and it was bloody cold when the sun disappeared behind the dark and foreboding clouds!

The games only goal came in the 71st minute, and it was LYNDON SEAL who scored it, glancing home a neat Lee Tyres free-kick from 10 yards out.

Basford battered the Park goal for the remaining 20 minutes or so, but failed to breach a very solid defensive back line. F-T 0-1

We stayed for the presentation of the League Championship trophy after the game - not the grandest trophy you'll ever see, but the individual ones looked good.....thankfully the weather stayed fine as EMCL Chairman  David Holland handed over the goods.

Heanor Town 3-0 Liversedge

A slightly flattering result for the Lions - the better football was played by their opponents, but whilst the Liversedge chances went a-begging, Heanor took theirs with some elan.

We've not been regular visitors to the Town Ground this season, so a lot of the players are new names to us.    Liversedge? I know very little about the West Riding outfit - I do know that former Eastwood Town legend Peter Knox signed for the Badgers from Liversedge - that's about it!

KYLE BRYANT hit the first of the Heanor goals in just the 6th minute - firing home a stunning 25 yarder that  keeper Ryan Blyth tried desperately to keep out, his fruitless dive ending with him clattering the upright resulting in him having to receive treatment.

A little blurred - but from over 100 yards away - great pics Kev!

Half-time saw me make a journey to the Heanor Town boardroom to collect a raffle prize.  Usually wine or biscuits - I have a lot of wine, and biscuits are no longer part of my diet - so it was a pleasant surprise to receive a £10 M & S voucher!  Mrs. Kev will appreciate it, no doubt!

Heanor increased their lead on 69 when an inch perfect cross in from the right wing from Neil Grayson was met by a powerful DWAYNE WILEY header.  Six yards out - keeper no chance!

Liversedge kept battling though, but just couldn't find the target. With 10 to go they finally had to admit defeat when sub JOSH THOMAS fired the ball at goal from 15 yards out and Blyth inexplicably let the ball roll underneath his body allowing it to trickle over the line. F-T 3-0

Plough Barflys 0-7 Nuthall

Sunday 21st April 2013 - Rolls Royce Sports complex - Watnall Road. Kick off 10: 37am

I thought there would be a few goals in this game - Nuthall are top of the NSL Premier Premier Division, whilst Barflys have had an ordinary season and after this result lie fifth in the table, 12 points behind their opponents.

When the Barflys lined up, it was clear that they were far from full strength - no Dakers, Hodgson, Bradshaw, Coupe, Harrison and Wilby. Nuthall had Tyrone Burton, Zeke Jenkins, Jake Want and Tobias Richardson in their starting eleven but no Jimmy Spiers or Heshem Ramadan.

To the casual football follower, these names may mean little or nothing, but they are all well known in local football circles.

RYAN JOHNSON opened the scoring for Nuthall in the 10th minute, beating his marker to the ball and firing home from 15 yards.  Had to wait until the 34th minute for the next goal, and it came from TYRONE BURTON who tapped in from close range after Johnson had picked him out in front of the goal.

Nuthall had a free-kick right on the 18 yard line on 39. and ZEKE JENKINS curled the ball into the net to make it three-nil to the away team at the break.

On the hour mark, BURTON was allowed to run at goal after beating the offside trap and calmly slotted the ball past the 'Flys keeper. 7 minutes later ZAK COBURN had the simplest of headers to make it five after the ball had looped high into the air due to a deflection on the intended cross.

Nuthall defender TOBIAS RICHARDSON was given a more forward role shortly after, and he found space at the far post to volley home the visitors' sixth.  Richardson then played in JOHNSON on 84, and the no. 10 made no mistake from 2 yards out. F-T 0-7

Attendance - varied.  About a dozen at kick off, peaking at 25 as the game went on. There were more watching a young girls match on one of the smaller pitches at the complex!

Saturday 20 April 2013

Hucknall Town 0-4 Halesowen Town

Town's last home game of the season - and yes, we took in all 21 games!! Home record reads : P21 W1 D2 L18...not exactly what we expected when we decided to go the season ticket route!!!

At least we had a bit of sunshine to brighten up the afternoon - and Hucknall had the bonus of a crowd of 154, although we reckon there were only a handful of Yellows supporters present.

The Yeltz almost scored after just 18 seconds, Ben Haseley's effort though slid just past the outside of the post.  The home team looked as though they could at least give their visitors a game, but again they were let down by defensive frailties - both Ryan Cheetham and Josh Stolworthy out-muscled by HASELEY who went on to fire past Hucknall keeper Michael Yates with 22 minutes played.

Cheetham again showed his inexperience for the second goal - allowing HASELEY to get in front of him to prod home a cross from the left. Haseley is the top scorer in the NP1S and has just been voted Evo-Stik player of the season. How CML defenders are supposed to cope with talent like this God only knows. They obviously can't, but at least they now have only two more games in the Evo-Stik League before they can return to a level more suited to their abilities. H-T 0-2

The second half became the Michael Yates show, as he made save after save from the Halesowen strikers. Haseley and Gavin Winsper were foiled on several occasions - then the non-stop attacking play brought out a cracking rendition of  "Oh What A Beautiful Morning" from the Halseowen faithful behind the Salterford Road goal!

Diminutive no. 9 Tom Warmer tried his luck from 20 yards on 80 - and saw his terrific curling shot crash of the angle of bar and post. Soon after, the same player brought out a fine diving finger-tip save from Yates, but the keeper blotted his copy book from the resultant corner, palming the set piece straight into his own net.

The travellers netted again as the game drew to a close - WINSPER nodding home unchallenged from a free-kick. F-T 0-4

Heanor Town 2-4 Long Eaton Utd

Not been to the Town Ground for a while - there have been a few improvements made to the stadium, needed to ensure Heanor's continued presence in the NCELP.  New seats behind the top goal and in the stand that runs down the side of the pitch - and a new turnstile "shed" has been constructed.

United's first goal on 22 came after a Heanor corner was cleared - the ball finding DANIEL GORDON who raced in from the left before firing across keeper Oliver Pannell and into the back of the net.

10 minutes later a raid down the right wing, a superb ball across the goal, a simple tap in for MATT SAVAGE doubled the travellers advantage.

KYLE BRYANT pulled one back for the Lions on 35, winning a race with his marker to the ball before hammering  a tremendous drive past Scott Miles in the the United goal. H-T 1-2

LYNTON FRANCIS glanced home a header from a free-kick on 67 to restore Long Eaton's two goal lead, but with 7 minutes left on the clock, Heanor were once again back in the game thanks to NEIL GRAYSON nudging the ball home after a rare old scramble in front of the United goal.

Long Eaton lost keeper Miles after he was injured in a 50/50 challenge with Grayson - then Heanor lost their keeper as well, Pannell dismissed by excellent Referee Lisa Rashid after bringing down an attacker in the box.  Skipper MICHAEL ARMSTRONG stepped up to blast home the spot kick in the 5th minute of added time. Basford Utd U19 7-0 Carlton Tn Academy

12-0 in the reverse fixture on Monday, but the gale force wind and a much stronger Carlton side meant this was not going to be anywhere near as easy as it was then.

Basford made a few changes to their Monday night line-up, but the outcome of this game was never in doubt after the first goal went in.

Playing with the wind behind them, United's first goal came in the 8th minute and inevitably went to DAN JACKSON - his 24th of the season for the U19's if my adding up is correct! Joe Brothwell played the ball in from the left wing and all the striker had to do was steer it home from close range.

JACKSON headed home Tom Teece's right wing corner at the far stick to double the lead two minutes later. On 23, Brothwell made a stunning run down the left and picked out KYLE KEETLEY in front of goal. The no. 11 turned superbly in front of goal before hammering the ball past Sam Marriott.

JACKSON completed his second triple in successive games - this time it was all his own work. A run down the left followed by a sweet curler that flew across Marriott and into the net.  After Jackson had dummied the keeper in front of goal, KEETLEY had the simplest of tap-ins to make it 5-0 on 42.

Seconds later BROTHWELL struck a cracking low drive from 18 yards out that gave Marriott no chance. H-T 6-0

Keeley was upended in the area in the 51st minute, and as he did on Monday, Conor Naylor stepped up to take the spot kick. Unlike Monday however, he was foiled by a wonder save by Marriott, the custodian tipping the effort onto the post - his defenders cleared the loose ball before a Basford foot could get to it.

BROTHWELL scored the only goal of the second half - hitting a hopeful shot from 22 yards that Marriott  didn't see due to one of his defenders blocking his view.

With the wind in their faces, the United lads struggled to get their game flowing and it was something of a relief when Referee Andy Rolph blew time on the proceedings.  F-T 7-0

Thoroughly enjoyed the season watching the Basford U19's - they only need three points from their games at Parkgate and Matlock to secure the Division title. What a double that would be for United with the first team being crowned champions of the EMCL after Barrow Town lost at Bardon Hill. Well done to all at Greenwich Avenue!

Belper Utd 0-1 AFC Mansfield

Decided to visit our spritual home again - this time though not to watch a Hucknall Town team. This semi-final looked tasty on paper - CML North Division AFC were already in two finals so far this season prior to kick off, and are one of the candidates for promotion from the CML.

Belper Utd currently lie in 5th place in the CML South, and with games in hand over clubs above them, could still finish in the top three.

Not overly impressed with this effort.....

There were a couple of decent penalty shouts - one stonewaller for AFC waved away - the other  was awarded by the linesman for an AFC handball, but this was over-ruled by Ref Chris Hunter - has to be said that Chris was not at his best by a long way.

Great to be in the company of Rob "the66pow" Waite again - always a pleasure.  Good to meet up with Pete Craggs as well - not seen him for a while.

The game was a battle of attrition - both teams cancelling each other out throughout the proceedings. Then, bless his little cottons, CARL HASLAM cut in from the right and rifled a tremendous shot that excellent United Adam Joblinksi never saw until it was past him. That was in 90 +3 minutes - and came just as we were celebrating Mansfield Town's Matt Green's winner in the 92nd minute at Hereford.

No extra-time, thank goodness!

Carlton T Academy 0-12 Basford Utd U19

Monday 15th April 2013 -- North Midlands U19 League Div 2 ko 7:46pm

A masterclass in attacking football from the Basford youngsters. They still some work to do before they can claim the league title, but this was clinical finishing at it's best, although you have to feel a little sorry for the Carlton lads.

Only a few cars in the car park when I arrived at 7:35pm - I wondered if there was actually a game on!  Just two other spectators were in the ground when I entered - this did reach a peak of about 20 when the lads on the adjacent 3G pitches ended their session.

DAN JACKSON scored the fastest goal I have seen this season - firing home from the edge of the box after just 10 seconds ( verified by the linesman). JACKSON netted again straight after - this one a sweet shot that flew past the Carlton keeper - 55 seconds on the clock - again verified by the very helpful linesman.

We had a goal drought then - until the 11th minute that is, when KYLE KEETLEY picked up a loose ball and ran past the keeper before running the ball into an empty net. KEETLEY delicately lobbed the Carlton keeper on 19 to net the second of his 5 goal haul.

Jackson looked menacing all night, and with Keetley and Joe Brothwell his partners up top, the home defence was run ragged time after time. It was Jackson who set up goal number 5 in the 23rd minute, racing to the touch line before playing a superb reverse pass straight to BROTHWELL, and the striker made no mistake from 10 yards.

That man Jackson then set up KEETLEY for his hat-trick on 26 - a neat through ball that the no. 11 simply had to add a little pace to - keeper no chance.

Carlton then conceded a penalty with 34 minutes played - and CONOR NAYLOR shouted he was having it "I haven't scored all season" - he has now. A superbly taken spot kick leaving the home keeper watching in awe as the ball rifled past him into the net.

KEETLEY added his fourth with just a few minutes of the first half remaining - a perfectly placed shot from the edge of the box that flew inside the far post. H-T 0-8

KEETLEY added his fifth with just 20 seconds of the second half played - a neat flick header from a right wing cross.  JACKSON deservedly completed his personal triple on 59, looping a header into the net after the ball was fired in from the left.

Anton Robinson replaced Jackson and set up the next goal for BROTHWELL, a simple prod home, then as the game drew to a close, ROBINSON got his name onto the score sheet, prodding home from close range after the keeper had block his initial effort.  F-T 0-12

Carlton were not much in the way of opposition  and I generally dislike such one sided games - but this Basford team has some talent and gave a totally supreme show of their attacking prowess.

Referee Craig Langton must rate this as one of his easiest games ever. Only had to chastise a couple of players over bad language - but I do think he needs a new stopwatch.... he will know what I mean!!!

Teversal FC 4-0 Hemsworth MW

We haven't been to Carnarvon Street for a while - needed to take in a no pressure, no worry game. With these teams lying 10th and 13th respectively before kick off, this NCEL Div 1 game seemed as good a choice as any.

Anyway, we always enjoy going to Teversal - always a friendly welcome and it's not too far to travel on a damp, dank, miserable afternoon.  Nice to see another young lady Assistant Referee - although Mr. Brittany Smith on the team sheet made us chuckle. Definately female!!

Dave Cockerill leads the Tevie handshakes

While you're down there Ref!!!

The game was fairly even and also fairly uneventful for the first 20 minutes or so, but then two goals in quick succession put the home team in charge.

Both were from the goal-den boot of skipper DAVE COCKERILL - the first on 22 minutes was a corner from the right that curled straight into the net over the despairing leap of the defender who was guarding the far stick.

Dave Cockerill's corner flies over Glyn Wright and into the net

The second saw the big man collect on the edge of the box, control, shield, flick up and volley the ball past Andy Joburns in the Welfare net.  Great goal - well worth the entry fee....

Hemsworth had a chance to reduce their arrears on the half-hour mark, but Robbie Crapper fired over from 3 yards after Tevie keeper Ryan Brooks had parried the ball straight to the youngster.

WILL HARCOURT added the home teams third with 5 minutes of the half remaining, his neat far post header  looping over Joburns, leaving the keeper grasping at thin air as the ball flew over his outstretched arms. H-T 3-0

The second half was nowhere near as good as the first, and although both keepers were called into action on occasion, the scoreline stayed a 3-0 until the 87th minute. Dave Cockerill crossed superbly from the right wing and ROB COLLINS met the ball with a superb far post diving header after the visiting defenders failed to intercept the cross. F-T 4-0
