Hucknall Tn 0-4 Brigg Town

Tuesday 27th November 2012 - Doodson Sport Cup : ko 7:46pm

Huge thanks go to HTFC General Manager Steve Peat for the team sheet, and for giving us guest status - and before anyone criticises, we very rarely accept "freebies". On this occasion we were pleased to accept the big mans offer to be his guests for the evening.

I took a couple of pics with my phone, but they turned out crap again. I'll use one just to illustrate the Brigg kit. On the team sheet it was given as all green - turned out to be a very pastel shade!!!

Brigg were purported to have brought a squad of fringe players, but if they were they were still far too good for the Yellows. Danny Hayes returned for this game, but he is now registered with Arnold Town so we probably won't see him in a yellow shirt again. Rob Austin getting the armband was a pleasant surprise - but Austin has been playing well so it was well deserved.

The Zebras took just 6 minutes to crack open the leaky Hucknall defence - RYAN PACZKOWSKI was allowed room some 22 yards from goal and hit a fierce left foot drive through a ruck of players, the ball flying under the dive of keeper James Martin.

This was a poor game played in miserable conditions, and for Hucknall the misery worsened on 21 when SCOTT HELLEWELL rose to head home a fine left wing cross.  Four minutes later, the visitors had their third from a direct free-kick. This is something we are becoming used to at Watnall Road, but when LIAM DAVIS struck the ball from 30+ yards it looked in all the way - and despite the despairing dive of Martin, the keeper really had little chance of stopping the effort flying into the top corner, so precise was the placement.

Hucknall's best effort of the half came on the half-hour mark - Warren Hatfield's delightful dink over a couple of defenders picked out Alex Ford, and although the striker connected well, Brigg keeper Miles Jenty blocked with his legs and the loose ball was cleared to safety.

The fourth Brigg goal on the brink of half-time should have been prevented, but when Davis crossed from the right, PAUL PRESTON was allowed to fire home from 6 yards after the Yellows defence once again failed to clear the ball in.  H-T 0-4

Spent the second half of the game behind the Watnall Road goal in the company of physiotherapist Fred Kirk - although we maybe trying and seek out a psychotherapist if the Yellows season continues on this downward spiral.  Hucknall almost got on the scoresheet towards the end of the game, but Ford's ball into the area for Hatfield was intercepted by Martyn Gee - looked like being a cracking O.G, but  Hucknall's luck is really out and the ball crashed onto the post and flew safe. F-T 0-4

Attendance 36

Attendance at Matlock v Mansfield was 758. Total attendances for the 11 Doodson cup games was 719, averaging just over 65 per game.  Time the league killed this competition forever, I reckon.  I asked Fred and Kev who were the current holders - their shrugs told me they didn't know, and neither did I ! At least Hucknall can concentrate on league survival now without any distractions - apart from the Senior Cup of course!

Saturday 24 November 2012

Hucknall Town 1-3 Gresley FC

Saturday 24th November 2012 - Evo-Stik League Div One South - ko: 3:04pm

Hucknall welcomed Gresley FC to Watnall Road on a cold and very damp afternoon. The visitors lie 4th in the table and on paper at least, should have buried bottom club Town with ease.

Gresley played a neat 4-3-3 formation, with Jordan Nadat, Phil Massingham and Rob Spencer the spearhead, while Hucknall lined up 4-4-2 with Alex Ford and Julian Topliss up top.

Ford and Lee McAnulty picked up injuries during the game – a worry for boss Gary Sucharewycz who could only select four subs fro this game, himself included.

Gresley had an early scare when keeper George Woodward slipped as he went to clear, but his defenders were quick to the ball and any danger was immediately snuffed out.

Nadat was unlucky on 3 when his shot was palmed onto the post by James Martin. The no. 9 was having a bad time with the Ref’s assistant – and in all fairness his complaints were on the most part, justified.  All three officials had off days, but in the end they can be said to have got the crucial decisions correct.

Close !!!

Matt Glass headed just wide from a James Leggitt cross in the 5th minute as the home team took the game to their high-flying visitors.

Nadat had a chance to put Gresley ahead after 11 minutes after he was superbly played in by Massingham – unfortunately for Nadat, Martin was quick off his line and managed to block the strikers effort.

A moment of madness on 19 by Woodward saw Hucknall awarded a penalty. The keeper’s rash challenge giving the Referee no option other than to give the spot-kick, that JULIAN TOPLISS fired home giving Woodward no chance.

The lead lasted a mere 5 minutes though, and it was former Gresley defender Matt Millns who appeared to give away a free-kick on the edge of the box that JAMES JEPSON fired arrow straight into the top corner – superb strike from the former Yellow. H-T 1-1

Mat Millns in action

Hucknall had the first real chance of the second half – with just 3 minutes played Matt Glass was played through on Woodward, but the winger’s shot was tame and the keeper collected the ball comfortably enough.

JORDAN NADAT made no mistake for Gresley seconds later, hammering home through a crowd of players after the home defence failed to clear their box.

Topliss went close on 52 for the home team, but Woodward made a cracking save, deflecting the ball across the goal and out for a corner.

Gresley should have gone further ahead on 56, but Spencer fired well over the bar form 4 yards after his first shot was blocked. Massingham had two one-on-one chances on 66 and 68, but fluffed them both, and was withdrawn shortly afterwards.

The visitors wrapped up the points with 10 minutes left, MARC GOODFELLOW blasting the ball past Martin, after the sub had seen his first effort blocked.  F-T 1-3

Attendance : 166

A vastly improved performance from Town, and although the gap at the foot of the table is now 8 points, the signs were there that the Yellows can close that gap and survive the dreaded drop into the Counties.

Green Dragon 2-3 Nuthall

Sunday 18th November 2012 - Notts F.A. Sunday Senior Trophy - ko 10:32am

For my latest Sunday football fix, I was joined by Sam Hodkin. Although he arrived 10 minutes into the game, this was not entirely his fault - the fixture was originally advertised as an 11am kick off.

This game was between two Notts Sunday League Premier Premier teams - they met in the league last week and the game ended as a 3-3 draw.  Nuthall are top of the division at the moment and have a smattering of well known non-league players in their ranks, Jimmy Spiers, Zeke Jenkins, Jake Want and Tyrone Burton to name just a few.

Added a few random images - just to illustrate how good Titchfield Park looks on a bright sunny day!!!

I originally had Kirkby v Birchover scheduled in, but when I was informed that level 3 referee Hristo Karaivanov was in the middle, I took the chance to catch up with our good friend.

Nuthall looked dangerous early doors, but were caught out in the 5th minute when MATTHEW LUCAS got to the ball before keeper Jake Want and flicked a neat header into the back of the net.

Lucas should have double the Dragon lead on 19, but he miskicked when left unmarked in front of goal. Costly miss, because just four minutes later the visitors drew level. A ball across the area picked out JIMMY SPIERS - and his fierce drive deflected into the goal by a defender. H-T 1-1

Had a chat to Hristo during the break, complimenting him on his handling of the game - although to be fair the players were on their best behavior, and this does make officiating so much easier.

Nuthall were ahead with 90 seconds of the second half played, JASON RUSSELL with all the time in the world to convert at the far post after his presence was totally ignored by the home defence.

Two minutes later Spiers fired over from six yards, but Nuthall did add their third on the hour mark, CONOR NAYLOR seeing his shot deflected in the net by the Dragon no. 4 shirt.

KANE MATTHEWS fired home at the far post for the home team on 67, but that was the final goal of the game and Nuthall progress into the semi-finals of the competition. F-T 2-3

H/C maximum 10 brave souls - a bright sunny morning, but it remained chilly throughout the game.

Saturday 17 November 2012

Hucknall Town 0-5 Kidsgrove Athletic

Saturday 17th November 2012 - Evo-Stik Northern League Div 1 South  ko 3:01pm

Hucknall are rebuilding after the departure of Brett Marshall, but new boss Gary Sucharewycz is finding it tough - and the rebuilding must continue if the Yellows are to survive relegation this season.

Playing 3-5-2 for the first half didn't work, but resorting to 4-4-2 after the break also didn't work.  The home team were a goal down after just 1 minute 50 seconds - DANNY SKELTON was given too much time and room 25 yards from goal and the Kidsgrove number 8 took full advantage, hitting a screamer past keeper James Martin, who had no chance.

On 17, Hucknall conceded a free-kick on the edge of their box and almost paid dearly when Andy Kinsey's effort rattle the angle of post and bar.

10 minutes later Liam Shotton headed home John Johnston cross at the far post, but luckily for the home team, the linesman's flag was already raised for the offside.

Another free-kick was needlessly given away on the edge of the box seconds later, this time KINSEY made no mistake, curling the ball into the top corner with Martin grasping at thin air.

Things could have been even worse for Hucknall on 36 - they had Martin to thank for a "worldy" that kept out Johnston's near post shot. H-T 0-2

Hucknall changed their formation at the break, and it looked for a while as if they were going to be able to give Kiddy a game -  if Julian Topliss's 47th minute curling shot had have gone under the bar instead of just over it, we may have had a game on our hands.

Alas, it was not to be - LIAM SHOTTON opened his body and fired across Martin in the 53rd minute to kill any chance of a home revival,  and 60 seconds later KINSEY ran past Rob Paling and stroked the ball delicately past Martin.

The visitors added their fifth on the hour mark, PAUL TAYLOR taking his time (and he had plenty) before sending the ball curling past Martin. Kidsgrove made personnel changes and took their foot off the gas as the game petered out - Hucknall had little or nothing to offer, even when the opposition had changed down to second gear. F-T 0-5

Hucknall are now 5 points adrift at the foot of the table - Sucharewycz and Robinson have a lot of work to do if the Yellows are to survive the drop into the Counties....

League table click here

Plus point :  keeper James Martin looks a real signing and couldn't be faulted for any of the goals - you have to hope that this heavy defeat won't affect the 20 year-old too much.

Negative point : seeing club Secretary and friend Tony Knowles so upset at how his beloved club is struggling.

Heanor Town 5-1 Clay Cross Town

We've not been to the Town Ground very often so far this season - we've not always been free when the Lions have been at home.

Stood behind the top goal with our good buddy Chris "Tall-Lad" Dent - we were joined by former Hucknall Town manager and friend Brett Marshall.  Great to see Brett again, and nice to know he is off on holiday next week - but he is chomping at the bit to get back into the game.  His no. 2 at Hucknall, Graham Walker, came to talk to us at half-time - he is also missing the game and is itching to get back.

When the lady with the raffle came round, Brett flashed a tenner - but was told there was no change available, so I paid for his tickets.  When "Crink" joined us at half time he gave me the raffle money. The winning numbers were announced over the p.a - guess who won? Not me! Brett strolled off to collect his bottle of wine - with his tenner still in his wallet! Crafty bugger!

Brett Marshall happy with the win...........!

Heanor won this game by a decent margin, but until late in the second half, Clay Cross were arguably the better team and actually went ahead on the half-hour mark, CARL WHITEFORD firing home through a crowded penalty area, giving Heanor keeper no chance.

With a minute of the first half remaining, Julian Capriano was dismissed after a poor challenge on half way. The former Heanor player's punishment was added to when the home team scored seconds after the set piece was taken, JIMMY RUSHBY volleying home sweetly at the far post. H-T 1-1

Heanor went ahead on 61 when a ball in the area appeared to deflect in off a defender - although the goal was credited to RUSHBY, it looked a definite OG to us.  The ball apparently hit Rushby as it was on its way into the goal.

Four minutes later it was game over when NATHAN BENGER fired home at the far post after the visiting defence failed to clear their 6 yard box.

RUSHBY completed his hat-trick 3rd in the 70th minute, nodding home after he was left unmarked in the middle of the goal, then with two to go, NICO DEGIROLAMO rifling across the keeper into the far corner of the net to make the scoreline slightly flattering for the home team.

Basford Utd U19 9-0 Maltby Main U19

Monday 12th November 2012 - played at Greenwich Avenue.

Basford entertained a Maltby team against whom they had previously scored 8 without reply in the League Cup.

Met up with Simon Matters inside the ground - then we were joined by student and FC United of Manchester supporter Sam Hodkin. Sam's on the telly apparently on Friday - Channel 4's quiz show "1001 Things You Should Know" hosted by Sandy Toksvig at 3:30pm.

Three of the Basford youngsters made substitute appearances for the first team at Ibstock last Saturday - well done to Dan Jackson, Jack Smith and Conor Naylor.

It was JACKSON who opened the scoring on 6, a simple unchallenged header at the far stick  JACK HODSON flicked home a well placed Smith free-kick in the 19th minute, then the Basford number 9 was on the mark again, an easy tap in after Jackson had dribbled his way into the area before picking out his strike partner.

Another Smith free-kick on 40 hit MITCHELL ROBINSON on the back and entered the net, then yet another Smith free-kick found JACKSON who had time to pick his spot and make it 5-0 at the break.

I have been to see all Basford U19 home games this season so far, and at times have been entertained royally - but one player has really given cause for a chuckle or two as he strove to get his name on the scoresheet.  ANTON ROBINSON tried and tried everytime he came off the bench, but just couldn't find the net. On 72 he fired home from just inside the box, much to to everyone's delight.

KYLE KEETLEY fired home straight from the re-start.  Missed this goal -  we were still commenting on Anton's strike!

HODSON wrapped up his hat-trick in the 77th minute, hammering the ball home from 15 yards, then ANTON ROBINSON added his second with three minutes left on the clock.  F-T 9-0

Good performance from the Basford lads again - a few more people than usual in attendance, my head count was 42. Is word finally reaching the outside world about the young talent that Basford have in their ranks?  Let's hope so - 31 goals at home from 5 games - next up Carlton Town provisionally. Carlton look to be another struggling team and this should be a home banker.

Plough Barflies 1-3 T8's

Sunday 11th November 2012 - Notts Sunday League Premier Premier.

Since I recently rediscovered the delights of Sunday football, this fixture was one I didn't want to miss - the local derby of all local derbies, the Plough and Harrow pub and T8's winebar are a mere 200 yards apart on Hucknall High Street. The players all know each other so well, and this looked like it could be a cracker of a game.

There were over 125 people in attendance on this bright, warm Sunday morning, but it was a little difficult to know who to count and who not to count, as the dugout area was populated by over 50 bodies!!!

Only one person per team standing lads!!!!

At 11 am, two minutes silence preceded kick off - a silence well observed as all present remembered the fallen.

Barflies had the first chance of the game in the 6th minute, but Ricky Hodgson's effort was well saved by T8's keeper. Damien Mann tried his luck soon after, but the 20 yard effort from T8's winger flew harmlessly over the bar.

The opening goal came on 26, and Barflies keeper Matt Innes can consider himself unlucky when he caught a 22 yard free-kick from CHAY BETTERIDGE. The effort was caught cleanly but the momentum carried the keeper and the ball over the line.  I was standing about 10 yards from the goal, and the ball was clearly dragged into the net by Innes - Referee Liam Jones gave the goal, but how he was able to call it I have no idea, he was on the edge of the box.  It mattered not  - the goal was given - much to the chagrin of the home faithful. Mr. Jones must have some balls to have made that call, but despite all the protests and effin and blinding, the goal stood, quite correctly.

A few heated minutes followed with three players receiving yellow cards in quick succession for rash challenges. Richard Harrison almost brought the home team level on the stroke of half time, but his neat flick flew just past the outside of the post.
H-T 0-1

Mann saw his fierce drive well saved by Innes on 50, but Barflies were still looking to level and went so, so close in the 76th minute when Dave Marlow's header crashed onto the bar, dropped down and hit the post before being hooked clear.

T8's were awarded a penalty a few seconds later when Kyle McDermott was fouled as he charged in on goal. ANDY START stepped up and beat Innes comfortably from the spot to double the away teams lead.

START was on the mark again four minutes later, his 20 yard looping shot cleared the advancing Innes and dropped sweetly into the middle of the goal.

Barflies had the last word though, ADAM SOLOMAN volleying home from 6 yards. Despite looking suspiciously off side as the ball was  played in, the goal stood. F-T 1-3

Enjoyed the game, the weather was kind, the banter great - I reckon I'll be watching a game most Sunday's from now on....

Saturday 10 November 2012

Hucknall T AFC 1-5 Belper Utd

Hucknall Town AFC were hoping to build on last weeks win at Blidworth, but found Belper a little too good on the day. We were greeted inside Watnall Road by AFC's Paul Stevenson. Last time we saw Paul he was running a line, and previous to that he was actually in the AFC goal! For this game he was on tea-bar duty - talk about versatile!

Stevo mentioned that AFC had signed a new keeper from Sunday side Premier Travel as stand in for James Beddingham, and Michael Morrell must have feared the worst when he had to be alert to palm away a shot at the foot of his near post in the opening seconds of the game.

Morrell was soon picking the ball out of the net though after he was left exposed by Adam Moran in the 4th minute. The home skipper was dispossessed by SHAUN SMITH some 25 yards from goal, and the Belper no. 9 took the ball into the area before smashing it into the roof of the net.

Smith (far left) fires home Belpers first goal

JOSH MUSCHETT fire the home team level on 9, blasting the ball past Belper keeper Adam Jablonski from 12 yards, after strike partner Jake Thomas had made a mess of his initial effort.

Muschett (no 11) about to pounce on the loose ball

Belper regained the lead with 13 played, SHAUN SMITH heading home at the far post from Dan Riley's superb cross.

Morell did well to block Smith's effort on 28, then the keeper produced another fine save after Riley headed Adam Nichols'  cross powerfully at goal.  H-T 1-2

Kev called our good buddy Brian Dennett during the break - and was surprised to learn that he was currently residing at Kings Mill hospital. Brian took ill during the week and I'm sure all those who are familiar with the old duffer wish him all the best and a speedy recovery...

SMITH completed his personal treble 9 minutes into the second period, latching onto a ball played over the Hucknall defence before running into the box and slotting past Morrell.

75 minutes in and Belper added to their total - this time ADAM TAYLOR rifling the ball home after Smith had failed to take advantage of a loose ball in the box.

JOSH WISDOM was played in on goal with 7 to play, the Belper sub rounding Morrell easily enough, and slotting calmly into the empty net. F-T 1-5

Had some great banter with our friend Robin Bourne who was running the line nearest to us - although one comment almost ended with Kev lucky not to have the flag inserted where the sun don't shine!! All good fun and it's great to have official with such a superb sense of humour!

Robin Bourne - even starts the game with a smile on his face!!

Town line-up ( thanks Stevo!) Morrell, Moran A, Crisp, Moran J, Ford, Featherstone, Davis, Jack Lomax, Joe Lomax, Thomas, Muschett. Subs: Booth, Sanders, Spencer

What a trio of games to miss!!!!

Couldn't get to the planned games this past week due to one thing and another - what a trio of games to miss!!!!

Monday 5th Nov - Arnold Town U19 4-2 Teversal U19
Tuesday 6h November - Gedling MW 1-8 Borrowash Victoria
Wednesday 7th November - Heanor Town 0-7 Bridlington Town

Flippin eck - 22 goals in three games!  Still, not going to the games at least saved me having to report on them.

Staying local on Saturday, probably Hucknall T AFC  - not really interested in travelling at the moment.  Really looking forward to the Sunday AM game at Rolls - Plough Barflys v T8's. Should be a cracker.

Wednesday 7 November 2012

Apologies

Thanks for visiting the site - but I have apologise for not posting since Sunday.  One or two things kept me from Mondays Arnold v Teversal U19 game, and Tuesday night, both me and Kev were a bit under the weather.  Hopefully off to Heanor v Bridlington on Wednesday. We'll see!

Plough Barflies 3-1 SPS Training (AET)

Sunday 4th November 2012 - Notts Sunday League Premier Section KO Cup

After making my way to the Hucknall Rolls Royce sports complex, I got out of the car and almost got straight back in again.  It was so cold that the thought of standing pitch-side on grass wasn't exactly appealing!

Pleased I stayed though - both these teams have several players well known to "ontheroad" and although this games wasn't a classic by any stretch of the imagination, it was a decent 120 minutes of cup football.  120 minutes! Yep - the last thing needed was extra-time, but  Lance Walker's cracking save on 90 ensured the game didn't finish on 90.

SPS Training had Steve "Giz" Brett, Ben Middleton, Lance Walker and Ross Lawrence in their starting eleven, as well as Ashley Whitt on the bench, so it looked a tough challenge for the home team.

The teams were well matched throughout the first half, and it was a mistake in the 40th minute that lead to the opening goal. Whitt lost the ball in midfield, and when the ball was played to JOE ASHURST, the striker  found himself one on one with Walker but managed to stay calm and lifted the ball over the keeper.  H-T 1-0

BEN MIDDLETON hammered home from 15 yards on 65, after the home defence failed to successfully clear their lines. Scores level, but 25 to play - surely the game couldn't end all square? It did, thanks to Walker, and although by this time I was totally frozen, I decided to see it out to the end. F-T 1-1

Extra time - SIMON MARTIN put Barflies back in front on 99, firing home after he was left unmarked at the far post.  HT ET 2-1

Simon Marlow was tripped in the box by "Giz" on 115, and ASHURST was made to wait two minutes before he could take the spot kick - but when the Referee finally allowed the penalty to be taken, he gave Walker no chance.

Two SPS players were sent off by Referee Roger Porter in the extra-time period - I suspect both for dissent or foul language. This was a fairly clean game, and although there were a few meaty challenges, for one team to end up with 9 players was a nonsense.  FT ET 3-1

Hucknall Town 0-2 Mickleover Sports

Saturday 3rd November 2012 - Evo-Stik North Division 1 South : ko 3:01pm

Another defeat for the Yellows, but once again they more than held their own against Mickleover Sports at Watnall Road. Watched by new boss Gary Sucharewycz, the home team gave a spirited performance and will have given "Scrabble" food for thought. Several new players are reported to be on the way to Hucknall, among them former favourite Ali Asher.

Two defensive lapses yet again proved to be the Yellows' downfall, but despite those mishaps, the home team battled well in the second half and were arguably worth a point. On another day, Julian Topliss would have had a hat-trick,

Tom Gutteridge in the Sports goal was on top form, making four or five decent saves. Town keeper Jason Fisher also made some fine saves, but will be a little disappointed to concede two sloppy goals.

The first goal was scored on 35 by ROBERT RITCHIE-SMITH - the strikers first kick after coming on as a sub was a speculative 25 yard effort that went under the dive of Fisher.  Easy to blame the keeper, but the player should really have been challenged before he could get the shot off.

In the 40th minute, a defensive mix up in the six-yard box presented the unmarked MICHAEL WILLIAMS with a glancing touch that saw the ball end up in the back of the net. H-T 0-2

In the second half, Hucknall battled well and never gave up, but some inspired keeping by Gutteridge meant the home team ended the game pointless. No notes second half - it was far too cold to take the gloves off!!

Hucknall: Fisher, Paling, Leggitt, McAnulty, Green, Hayes, Garnett, Rennalls, Spargo, Hatfield, Topliss. Sub:  Brown

Sports : Gutteridge, Land, Guy, Martin, Wood, Storey, Graves, Williams, Steadman, O'Connell, Smith. Subs : Munn, Smith RR, Moon, Hoyle
