Damp miserable night, especially for the Welfare faithfull! This was the 7th defeat in their last 11 games - the other four games were drawn. Gedling website manager/photographer Tony Hay actually posted on facebook prior to the game "when will we win again??" Maybe against league leaders Basford on Saturday? Maybe not!!
Gedling gave debuts to Jarrod Westcarr and Nick Hawkins, but it was Greenwood's Mr. Reliable Jordan Blair and strike partner Lewis Williamson who caught the eye throughout the game.
Spent the game in the company of Richard Lane and "deadly" Derek - Richard had promised to let me have a copy of a programme team list from yonks ago, Derby Rolls Royce v West Hallam. As a former programme editor, I know how it annoys the crap out of you when the opposition fails to submit a squad. This particular editor had obviously had enough !!!!!
Excellent !!
Greenwood went ahead with just 8 minutes gone, and they can thank Welfare's Tom Watson for an assist. His poor pass picked out Williamson who in turn fed JORDAN BLAIR. The prolific striker ran in on goal slotted past keeper Rhys Watkinson.
The home team gave away the possession needlessly again on the edge of their area on 26, and LEWIS WILLIAMSON took full advantage of the gift, drilling the ball low and hard past the despairing dive of Watkinson. H-T 0-2
Greenwood went further ahead with just 6 minutes of the second period played. A superb cross from Blair flew over Watkinson's reach, fell onto the goal-line and was bundled into the goal by unfortunate Gedling full-back TOM WATSON, who had raced back to cover. This goal has been credited to Blair, but I'm having none of that!!!!
From the restart, George Bradley played a cracking ball to Westcarr - who played an even better ball across field to pick out ASHLEY WHITT on the far stick. A neat touch to control and a shot across James Kay gave the home team a little hope of a dramatic comeback.
It was not to be though, as on the hour mark Kieran Whalin and Blair combined well to set up WILLIAMSON who fired past Watkinson from 12 yards.
BEN MIDDLETON added a second for Gedling on 75, his looping header from a right wing cross leaving Kay stranded. After that, the Greenwood defence retook control of the game and saw out the final 15 without further incident. F-T 2-4
