or tales of Hillier and the handshake,,,,

Almost decided to give this game a miss - after 4 matches on consecutive days, all in freezing conditions, I felt I'd had just about enough of the bloody chill to last me a while. Pleased we made the effort though as it gave us chance to meet up with our friends Steve Reading, Richard Lane, Rob Hornby, Scott Ward and Brett Marshall.

Steve is always good for a laugh - and always seems to have a tale or two to tell....like how he went to a match at Cheddar. "Why not?" he said - he'd not been there before!! His journey from Chesterfield to Cheddar including a bit of pottering about was over 400 miles. Nice new car do do it in though .. I'd better not mention that he's a retired bank manager, knowing how we all love bankers.....oops, I just mentioned it - never mind!!

The game itself was pants to be fair - Newark played mostly reserves and almost paid the price in the 10th minute when they allowed Dave Voller to try his luck from 20+ yards - fortunately for the travellers the ball struck the foot of the post before rebounding to safety.

Newark's best chance of the half fell to Ian Hillier on 35 - Blidworth keeper Jason Fisher had to dive full length to keep out  Hillier's ferocious 25 yard drive.  H-T 0-0

The visitors were awarded a free-kick with 8 minutes of the second half played. Although IAN HILLIER's set piece was deflected as it smashed through the defensive wall, it was hit firmly enough and despite getting a hand to it, the ball flew under Fisher's body to give Town the lead. 

The goal prompted Mr. Hornby into tweeting, his cry of "who scored that?" answered by Richard Lane "Ian Hillier!"  With 10 minutes left to play, HILLIER tapped in his second after a superb ball in from the left from Danny Purves picked him out at the near post. Up went the cry from Mr. Hornby "who scored that?" - which was answered by two or three people "Ian Hillier!"

Two minutes later HILLIER completed his personal treble, hammering a 25 yarder that was past Fisher before he could react. "Who scored that?" came the cry --- and in chorus we all shouted "Ian Hillier!!!!" much to Mr. Hornby's delight.  Well, it was funny at the time.....F-T 0-3

As we were saying our goodbyes, Steve held out his hand for Richard to shake in farewell. Richard made as if to return the handshake then did a quick rethink and diverted his outstretched hand into mine, leaving Steve with his outstretched hand shaking thin air!!!  Steve did manage to shake hands with Richard eventually, but as we walked to the car park, admitted he was somewhat amused/bemused, but he must have driven back to Chesterfield with a huge grin on his face - I'm still chuckling now ...his face was a picture!!

Tuesday 26th February - results

NSL Senior Divison - kick off 7:30pm

We made the short trip to Hucknall Rolls to see them entertain Kimberley MW in a rearranged NSL Senior Division fixture.  Sam Hodkin joined us at kick off and kept me entertained throughout the game. 

Kane Matthews lead the line for Rolls and was unlucky not to have bagged at least once during the first half - solid defending and a couple of goal line clearances foiling the diminutive striker.

We had to wait until the 70th minute for the opening goal - Billy Brooks firing home through a ruck of players from just inside the box, after the visitors failed to clear a corner.  Jack Allen may claim the goal - it did appear to hit him as it flew into the back of the net. (UPDATE -- JACK ALLEN has been given the goal - even Billy said it was his!).

Rolls were awarded a penalty on right on full time - their no. 11, CHAY BETTERIDGE, stepped up and made no mistake from the spot. F-T 2-0

Basford's youngsters fell to their first league defeat at the hands of Matlock Town on a bitterly cold evening at Greenwich Avenue.  The home team have been superb all season, but looked a little jaded and off the pace - maybe their third game in 7 days was a little too much to ask...

Having said that, Matlock looked a decent team and in Myles Wright have a goalkeeper to watch - definitely one for the future..

I wouldn't normally do this, but seeing as my good friend and blogger extraordinaire Rob Waite has already updated his "the66pow", I'll just add a LINK HERE.....

Spent the evening in Rob's company again, along with Mick Cook and former Harworth U19 manager Glenn McPherson - Glenn resigned last week after behind the scene troubles that he felt left him no alternative other than to fall on his sword. 

The Harworth team had beaten Matlock 4-0 last week, but there were 5 changes from that team to the one that started at Basford, although I'll take nothing away from Harworth, they do have a cracking set of players.

Goals from ADAM CLARKE on 78 and ALEX BRADSHAW on 81 ultimately settled the game - and no-one could argue that on the night, the visitors were by far the better team.  Matlock have now only played eight league games - with only 2 months left of the season they have another 12 games to fit in. Seems that they have a big enough squad to cope, but it's going to be a hard slog to get their season finished before the end of April.  F-T 0-2

T8's 2-1 Plough Barflys

Sunday 24th February 2013 - Notts Sunday League Premier Premier Division

A large contingent of the Linby CW squad play for these very local rivals, but this was no friendly - plenty of meaty challenges and loads of  incident, but it was far too cold to take notes. To be honest this wasn't a great game, but well over 60 were in attendance and at least it gets you out of the house on a Sunday morning!!

Before  kick-off  T8's were unbeaten in the league so far this season, while Barflys had lost 5 of their 11 games played. The teams share the Rolls Royce Leisure pitch - so there is no real home advantage. The "away" team took a well deserved lead on 26. After the T8's defence failed to clear a corner from the right, DAVE WARDEN hammered home the loose ball from 6 yards out.  H-T 0-1

Veteran Terry Henshaw put in a great display at the heart of the Flys defence as the home team searched frantically for the equaliser.  Danny Hayes thought he had levelled with a neat header from a corner on 74, but Ref Liam Jones saw a push in front of goal and awarded Flys a free-kick.

From the free-kick, the ball somehow found it's way into the path of  T8's striker KYLE McDERMOTT who looked well offside, but was allowed to go on. Keeper Aaron Wilby did well to block the initial effort, but McDermott never looked like missing at the second attempt.

The game was turned completely around with 10 to play, T8's grabbing the lead for the first time in the game. From  a right wing corner, Danny Hayes headed the ball across the Fly's goal and CHAY BETTERIDGE had the  simple task of stooping to nod home at the far post.  F-T 2-1

Hucknall Town 1-1 Lincoln Utd

First point for the Yellows this year, and only the second goal - but overall a cracking performance by Town!

No settled team for Hucknall recently, but the newest batch of players did well to contain United - and with a bit of luck and a bit more composure in front of goal, they could have took all three points.  Great debut from Michael Yates in goal - saw Michael playing for Blidworth early in the season, and Greenwood a few weeks ago. A big step up for the big lad, but he produced a few good saves and took several knocks keeping the United attackers out. 

Not a very good turnout but this wasn't, on paper at least, going to be a classic. Turned out to be a very good game between two teams struggling at the wrong end of the table. 

Hucknall had several attempts at goal early door, but the shots hardly troubled United keeper Phil McGann. Yates on the other hand had to be at his best in the 10th minute to keep out Cunningham's effort from an Aaron Rice corner. The loose ball was smacked against the bar and eventually booted out for another corner. This time Rice's kick was met on the corner of the 6 yard box by the head of BRENDAN McDAID, the United skipper left totally unmarked for some reason or other. That was McDaids 100th goal for Lincoln - well done, Sir!!

Warren Hatfield saw his header deflected for a corner on 16 as Hucknall looked to get back on level terms. Chris Freestone had a header saved by McGann after 20 minutes, then soon after, Dennis Simms saw his shot collected well by the visiting keeper.

On 41 minutes, Gio Carchedi crashed a shot off the post with Yates well beaten, and the half ended with McDaid heading home again, only for his effort to be disallowed after Referee Harty saw some pushing in the box. H-T 0-1

The home team levelled the scores seven minutes into the second period. Anthony Rowley made a superb run down the left, and after he jinked his way into the box, pinged the ball into the 6 yard box where DENNIS SIMMS was on hand to smash home Hucknall's second goal of the year...marvellous!!

Hucknall were really up for it now, and Freestone almost put them ahead on 56, but his 40 yard speculative drive was well tipped over by McGann. 

Yates was Hucknall's saviour again on 72, diving at the feet of Scott Coupland and blocking superbly. Hatfield played a magnificent ball into the path of Mitch Slawson seconds later, and even though Slawson controlled well enough, he wasn't able to get a shot off before McGann was able to close him down. F-T 1-1

So at last - a point in 2013 but caution needed - this wasn't a top team in the division. Hopefully next Saturday the Yellows can surprise Newcastle Town and claim those oh so vital three points....

Linby CW - new appointment

After a meeting on Thursday evening, Linby Colliery Welfare FC have announced the appointment of Steve Peat as Club General Manager.

Steve is charged with raising the profile of his new club, dealing with sponsorship and generally helping to get the club back up with the elite of the Nottinghamshire non-league football. Steve was recently GM at struggling Hucknall Town, but called it a day after the position became untenable.

Linby were a force to be reckoned with in the 1950's, winning the Notts F.A. Senior Cup on three occasions, but they spent the 60's and 70's in the Central Alliance and East Midland leagues.  They moved to their current Church Lane home in 1985, and slowly edged their way back to former glories, winning the Notts. F.A. Intermediate Cup in 1995 and winning promotion to the Notts Alliance Senior Division in 1997. 

In 2005 the club gained F.A. Charter standard status. A recent decline saw Linby finish rock bottom in the NSL Senior Division, but when the pyramid was restructured the opportunity arose for the Club to join the Central Midlands League and it was snapped up eagerly. 

Plans have recently been published for improvements to Church Lane.  These include moving the playing area closer to the changing rooms and having floodlights and stands erected.

Talking about his new position, Steve said " Hopefully I can help put Linby back on the map, but I also want to make people aware that Linby are up and coming with some really exciting future plans - a team for the future".

Pinxton v Nottingham Utd. 23rd February

Tim Graney will be having his head shaved in the Welfare after the Nottm. Utd game on the 23rd February. This is in aid of Pinxton Midfielder Ben Moore who is going to be out of the game for up to 10 months with a knee injury, but more importantly off of work until he is fit enough to return. Free Entry to Greenwood Meadows FC v Bardon Hill Sports FC

Greenwood Meadows Football Club would like to open up the opportunity for FREE entry to spectators under the age of 16 to their fixture against Bardon Hill Sports FC who play in the East Midlands Counties Football League. Children looking to take up this offer will need to be accompanied by an adult due to Child Safety procedures.

The fixture is due to kickoff is at 3pm and the gates will open at 2pm for the fixture. 

Entry will be £4 for an adult and completely FREE for children under the age of 16. Children may however need identification to prove they are under the specified age.

The last time these two met the game ended in a 2-2 stalemate in a fiery match up which led to an exciting finish, Bardon Sports exhibiting some top class defending which held Greenwood Meadows back meaning both teams walked away with 1 point. The fixture is scheduled to take place at Lenton Lane, Nottingham, NG7 2SA.

"If we get over 100 people turn up I have stated that I will dance to Gangnam style in the club house or on the pitch during the half time interval. We are also going to be listing the school that every child attends to see how many pupils attend from what schools".

Top of the table clash on a bitterly cold evening at Greenwich Avenue,  but with "the66pow" Rob Waite and Heanor Town devotee Tony Squires as company,  it was a pleasant enough way to spend a couple of hours...

Got to hand it to Rob, travelling from Retford to Basford to see Under 19's football. Ulterior motive though, as apparently his Harworth U19's play both Basford and Ollerton in the near future, so this was a bit of a scouting mission! He handed over a bottle of Smirnoff that I won at the recent Harworth CI race night - cheers Rob!!!

Basford attacked from the off,  although they failed to dominate their visitors as they have done most of their opponents so far this season.  It took 15 minutes for United to open their account, although it was from a very dubious penalty awarded for hand ball. At first we thought, as did all the players and spectators, that United centre-back Luke McKeag had handled as he went for the ball from a corner, but the officials saw different and adjudged that it was an Ollerton player who handled and the penalty was given.  DAN JACKSON didn't care - he smashed the ball past Joe Fletcher with aplomb.

JACK SMITH added the second for Basford on 21, latching onto a superb through ball before composing himself and calmly slotting past Fletcher from  8 yards.  Ollerton's heads didn't drop though, and they had a couple of quick-fire chances soon after, one effort crashing off the Basford bar, then another sent flying over the bar from just a few yards out. H-T 2-0

The visitors did pull a goal back in the 63rd minute - a towering header from centre-half CHAS TAYLOR from a right wing corner.  This seemed to upset the home team and although they had to work harder than have had to in other games this season, they duly restored their 2 goal lead on 77, DAN JACKSON racing in from the left and sending a bullet shot across Fletcher and into the far corner of the net. 

With 7 to play, JACK HODSON gave the scoreline a somewhat flattering look, flicking home a ball in from the right. F-T 4-1

Ollerton were as good a team as I have seen Basford play this season - they just have that certain something that gives them the slight edge - his name is Dan Jackson. Maybe it's wrong to say that one man makes a team, but this one man certainly adds a hell of a lot to an already cracking team!

Kirkby Town 2-0 Notts Medics

Sunday 17th February 2013 - Notts F.A. Sunday Junior Cup 1/4 final

Although unbeaten in all competitions so far this season, this was to prove a tough, tricky tie for Kirbky Town - their opponents won this competition a couple of years back and currently lie 3rd in the EMPAL First Division. 

I was supposed to be at Titchfield Park watching the Empire play Eastwood & Kimberley, but that fixture disappeared off the NSL website. The Barflys game was called off, so it was off to the Summit Centre. Got there at 10:20am - and met Fredkirkbytown who advised me that the kick off was scheduled for 11 am! Gave me a chance to nip around the corner and spend a few minutes with my Son and Grand-daughter, so it wasn't wasted half hour.

The game actually kicked off a couple of minutes early, but I was back and inside the ground by then. The bright sunshine was offset slightly by the chill wind, but on the whole a very pleasant day compared to what we have had to put up with recently.

The first half was a dour affair  - it was left to vociferous Kirkby boss Andy Cruddace to liven things up, letting his players, the ref and the spectators know his feelings! I've a lot of respect for Andy, but sometimes his passion was a little OTT and often distracted his players, the majority of whom are seasoned non-league journeymen and know exactly what is expected of them.  H-T 0-0

Kirkby : Boot, Armstrong, Collinson, Voller, Dawson, Wilkins, Marshall, Ludlow, Watson K, Bower, Smith.

The home team broke the deadlock on 55, KYLE LUDLOW smashing home a fierce left foot shot from the edge of the box, after a Medic defender had failed to properly clear Keiran Watson's cross to the far stick.

Dave Voller thought he had doubled the Town advantage in the 63rd minute, but the ball had already gone out of play before the defender smashed the ball home.  The second goal wasn't long in coming though - a superb KIERAN WATSON effort from the corner of the box that curled sweetly into the top far corner of the goal. Two cracking goals - both well worth the entrance fee.....!

Medics showed little in front of goal, and exited the competition without really causing the home defence or keeper any serious problems. F-T 2-0

Hucknall Town 0-5 Sheffield FC

With our enthusiasm sadly waning, we went to Watnall Road more in hope than in expectation that the Yellows could put in a good performance and maybe grab a point at least from a Sheffield FC team that has been struggling of late.

Not to be unfortunately, Sheffield weren't a class team but they still had too much nous for a Hucknall team whose players are trying to come to terms with playing at this level.

Goalkeeper James Beddingham has just signed from Hucknall Town AFC and although he had a decent debut, he still ended up picking the ball out of the net on five occasions.

Beddingham was called into action four minutes from the off, punching away a corner. The keeper had to be alert on 11, when Steve Wooley picked out Jon Muldoon - the striker struck his effort at goal well enough, but Beddingham did well to dive and save.

Wathaq Al-Haken put in a decent cross in the 23rd minute which Scott Thorpe did well to head away. Four minutes later Remi Davis lost the ball in midfield to Bjorn Taylor, and the midfield general picked out STEVE WOOLEY who saw his first effort blocked, but converted well at the second attempt to give the visitors the lead. H-T 0-1

Sheffield doubled their lead in the first minute of the second period when ANDY GASCOIGNE received a return pass from Wooley and somehow curled a shot into the goal off the post.  The effort was really a poor mis-hit, but when your luck's out that's how it goes.

Jack Hawkins replaced Davis at the break - we thought he was a mascot when we first saw him! Anyway the diminutive midfielder had a terrific 20 yard shot tipped over by visiting keeper Liam Flynn on 49, and gave us some hope that the Yellows could get back into the game.

Sheffield had other ideas though and when WOOLEY grabbed his second in the 58th minute, the game was effectively over. It was a neat finish, a bullet shot from the corner of the box that flew past Beddingham before he could react.

Wooley then tried to sneak a free-kick past Bedingham at his near post, but the keeper was able to dive and palm away the effort for a corner. Wooley's corner was well met by the head of giant centre-back Karl Colley, forcing the keeper into another great save. 

Hucknall had an effort from Jason Dawson well blocked by Flynn on 71 after a storming run foward and pin-point pass from Jason Gregory picked out the substitute. 

Ben Birch at the back had really caught the eye, but the Hucknall no.4 blotted his copy book after 77 minutes had been played, tripping Muldoon in the area.  WOOLEY stepped up and lashed the ball home to complete his personal triple.

Gregory did well to block Wooley on the line after Al-Hakam had fired the ball in from the left. It was AL-HAKAM though who rounded of the scoring for the travellers on 44, a clinical hit from 10 yards after the ball was played across the Hucknall goalmouth. F-T 0-5

Referee Joe Clark had a quiet game, just the two bookings late on for Simpson and O'Donnell.

Overall :- encouraging from Town, better performance than last week, although they conceded more! It was strange to see Warren Hatfield up top on his own for the first half - although we know "Wiz" as a striker from days gone by, recently he has been a solid midfield player - just what the Yellows needed in this game basically!

CHANGE OF VENUE !!! Hucknall 's Watnall Road ground is waterlogged so the game is to be played at Clipstone

Linby CW v Clipstone Welfare. Venue : Clipstone Welfare's Lido ground.

Thursday 14th February -- kick off 7:45pm. 

Adults £3 including programme and raffle. 

Re-arranged Notts F.A. Senior Cup tie. The original game scheduled for Tuesday 5th February was called off as the pitch at Clipstone was waterlogged. The tie was to be played at Clipstone as Linby's Church Lane ground isn't floodlit. The same day Hucknall Town were removed from the competition as they couldn't raise a team of players who were eligible to play in the competition. Carlton were awarded a walk-over. 

Pinxton v Nottingham Utd. 23rd February

Tim Graney will be having his head shaved in the Welfare after the Nottm. Utd game on the 23rd February. This is in aid of Pinxton Midfielder Ben Moore who is going to be out of the game for up to 10 months with a knee injury, but more importantly off of work until he is fit enough to return. Please come along and support Ben!

Greenwood Meadows v Bardon Hill Sports FC 23rd February 

Free Entry to Greenwood Meadows FC v Bardon Hill Sports FC

Greenwood Meadows Football Club would like to open up the opportunity for FREE entry to spectators under the age of 16 to their fixture against Bardon Hill Sports FC who play in the East Midlands Counties Football League. Children looking to take up this offer will need to be accompanied by an adult due to Child Safety procedures.

The fixture is due to kickoff is at 3pm and the gates will open at 2pm for the fixture. 

Entry will be £4 for an adult and completely FREE for children under the age of 16. Children may however need identification to prove they are under the specified age.

The last time these two met the game ended in a 2-2 stalemate in a fiery match up which led to an exciting finish, Bardon Sports exhibiting some top class defending which held Greenwood Meadows back meaning both teams walked away with 1 point. The fixture is scheduled to take place at Lenton Lane, Nottingham, NG7 2SA.

Jevon Swinscoe, Greenwood Meadows Match Day Secretary adds:-

"If we get over 100 people turn up I have stated that I will dance to Gangnam style in the club house or on the pitch during the half time interval. We are also going to be listing the school that every child attends to see how many pupils attend from what schools".

Hucknall Town 0-3 Carlton Town

What a poor game - a candidate  for our worst game of the season, but also with a candidate for goal of the season thrown in.

Goodness knows where the Hucknall players hail from, but I suppose things are looking up as far as actual numbers go! A full compliment of 16 -- Carlton could only name three subs, and Assistant Manager Mark Clarke was among them.

Only Alex Malong, Jason Gregory and Mitch Slawson were known to us - but the rest of the players were a mystery

. 

Carlton almost scored with just 10 seconds on the clock, but Ian Brown hooked his shot over the bar after Julian Topliss had picked him out with a cross from the right.  Topliss himself had a great chance to score on 10, but he failed to connect at the near post.

Hucknall were awarded a free-kick in the 19th minute - and it took a good diving save from Martin Kearney to keep out Ashley Cheetham's 20 yard effort.

The Millers went ahead after 26 minutes when the unmarked IAN BROWN headed home Josh Thornton's pin-point right wing cross.

Jason Dawson almost drew the home team level on 36 after he was picked out on the far post by Slawson  -  only a good interception from Rob Darkin foiled the Yellows no. 9.

JULIAN TOPLISS then gave us a moment to remember this game by!  He was played in on the near post and flicked the ball right footed over one defender, left footed over another defender before smashing the ball past Malong - terrific skill from the former Watnall Road favourite... H-T 0-2

The only goal of the second period came in the 50th minute - a Thornton free-kick from the right headed home by the once again unmarked IAN BROWN. Seasoned Evo-Stick level players would know to mark the prolific Brown tightly, but the Hucknall defence wasn't made up of Evo-Stik level players and they were found sadly wanting for both the striker's goals. 

Both teams made changes throughout the second half, and the game rapidly dipped into mediocrity. Referee Alan Sarginson's final whistle was a very welcome indeed!!! Mr. Sarginson had a easy game - but it has to be said that the players' attitude was first class throughout.
